According to historians, trick-or-treating traces its origins to a 16th-century custom in Scotland and Ireland known as “guising.” Back then, children (and a few adults) would don costumes and go to door-to-door asking for fruit, baked goods, or money in exchange for reciting poetry (an aspect we are, arguably, spared from in the modern era). While it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the practice and the phrase “trick or treat” were popularized in North America, it’s clear that the desire to give and get candy on a chilly autumn night has been with us for a long, long time.
