Trader Joe's Sweet Chili Black-Eyed Pea Tempeh Chips, 85g

First invented near the dawn of the 18th century (or so food historians estimate), tempeh is a traditional Indonesian dish made from fermented legumes—most commonly soybeans—formed into a firm, savoury cake, in a process that’s not entirely dissimilar to cheesemaking. TJ's reached out to a supplier in Indonesia about making a savoury, crispy, tempeh chip. And when they came back with what would eventually become TJ’s Sweet Chili Black-Eyed Pea Tempeh Chips, we were overjoyed.

The first twist in these Chips is that they’re made with Tempeh that’s made from fermented Black-Eyed Peas, as opposed to soybeans. Right off the bat, this gives the Tempeh a mild flavour and slightly starchier texture that takes exceptionally well to frying into a crispy Chip. The second twist is that they’re seasoned with a combo of sugar, Chili powder (which provides quite a kick!), and garlic, which ably complements the inherent umami notes of the Tempeh. It all results in a uniquely delicious Chip that can be enjoyed on its own, with a dip, or as a side for a sandwich, salad, or rice bowl.
